Women's Basketball Falls at Keene State, 74-48

1/10/2009

KEENE, NH-Host Keene State outscored the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's basketball team in the second half, 45-25, and defeated the Corsairs, 74-48, in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader at Spaulding Gymnasium Saturday.

UMass Dartmouth and Keene State traded the lead back and forth in the first half, and the Corsairs led with six minutes remaining and trailed by six at halftime only because Sarah Laudano of the Owls hit a three-point field goal as time expired in the first half. But Keene State scored the first eight points of the second half and held a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.

Junior forward Kaylin Nelson (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS/Salve Regina) led the Corsairs with 14 points, sophomore forward Tashauna Ashmeade (Hyannis, MA/Barnstable HS) added 12 and senior forward Vicki Andruszkiewicz (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) contributed 10. Ashmeade grabbed 13 rebounds and Nelson had 10, but KSC won the battle of the boards, 44-36.

"We hung with them in the first half, and our defense rotated well," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amanda Van Voorhis, "They used 13 players, and their depth just wore us down in the second half. We were within three points at half, until they hit a three at the buzzer. We had plenty of positives that we can take from our performance, so we'll look to build on that."

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 2-10 and 0-3 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while Keene State improved to 11-2 and 2-1 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Eastern Connecticut State in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Tuesday evening.
