Women's Basketball Falls at Eastern Connecticut State, 90-47

1/13/2009

WILLIMANTIC, CT-Host Eastern Connecticut State scored the first 12 points of the game, raced to a 43-22 halftime lead and defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's basketball team, 90-47, in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader at Geissler Gymnasium Tuesday evening.

Junior forward Kaylin Nelson (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS/Salve Regina) put the Corsairs on the board with a layup with 13:49 remaining in the first half. The Warriors built a 24-7 lead four minutes later, but UMD fought back, getting a three-point play from sophomore forward Tashauna Ashmeade (Hyannis, MA/Barnstable HS) and a jumper and two consecutive three-point baskets from senior forward Vicki Andruszkiewicz (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) in an 11-4 run that cut the ECSU lead to 28-18 with 7:29 left. But the Warriors outscored the Corsairs in the remainder of the first half, 15-4, and led by 21 points at halftime.

Andruszkiewicz of UMass Dartmouth led all scorers with 18 points, while Ashmeade contributed 15. Ashley McFetridge led Eastern Connecticut with 17 points, Amanda Pierlioni added 14, Nicky Morey had 13, and Kate Brunet and Brittany Whiteley each scored 11. Nelson grabbed six rebounds for the Corsairs, but the Warriors' Jessica Moriarty led the way with eight as ECSU outrebounded UMass Dartmouth, 42-17, forced 22 turnovers while committing 15, and made 56.7 per cent of their shots from the field to 36.4 per cent for the Corsairs.

"Eastern Connecticut is a very good team," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amanda Van Voorhis. "They push the ball hard, and our turnovers led to some easy baskets in transition. We doubled down on their post in the second half, but they were hot from the outside. They just shot lights out tonight."

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 2-11 and 0-4 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while Eastern Connecticut State improved to 10-2 and 3-1 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Plymouth State in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
