Women's Basketball Falls to Plymouth State, 81-73
Athletic Department NewsDave Geringer [Contact] Women's Basketball Falls to Plymouth State, 81-731/17/2009NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting Plymouth State used a 10-5 run in the final 3:14 to pull away and defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's basketball team, 81-73, in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday. Kalie Judd's layup with 3:01 left gave PSU a 73-68 lead, and the Panthers then made eight consecutive free throws in the final 1:52 to seal the victory. Laura Kent and Kayla Morin each made a pair, and Judd hit the final four. The Corsairs battled from behind for most of the second half, getting three of free throws from senior guard Madison Malloy (Cranston, RI/Bay View Academy) and a layup from sophomore forward Tashauna Ashmeade (Hyannis, MA/Barnstable HS) to cut Plymouth State's advantage to 71-68. But they could get no closer. The Panthers built a 27-20 advantage in the first 16 minutes of the first half, but UMD came back, using a 10-2 run to take a 30-29 lead into the locker room at halftime. Senior forward Vicki Andruszkiewicz (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) scored the first seven points of the run on a three-pointer and four free throws, while Ashmeade added a layup and Malloy contributed a free throw to make it 30-27. Kalie Judd's jumper with 24 seconds left in the half kept PSU within a point at halftime. In the second half, Judd's three-pointer tied the score at 54-54 with 10:22 remaining. Andruszkiewicz' jumper moments later gave the Corsairs a 57-56 lead, but Alicia Doucet of PSU hit a layup and Kent added two free throws, and Plymouth State remained in front the rest of the way. Andruszkiewicz led UMass Dartmouth with 25 points, Ashmeade added 19, Malloy had 11 and  junior forward Kaylin Nelson (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS/Salve Regina) contributed 10. Judd of the Panthers led all scorers with 27 points, Doucet added 26 and Kent had 14. Ashmeade grabbed 10 rebounds, Doucet of PSU had nine and Nelson had eight for the Corsairs, who lost the battle of the boards by a single rebound, 35-34. "I was proud of the way we played, we asked our team not to leave anything out on the court, and they didn't," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amanda Van Voorhis. "Plymouth State outlasted us. Their post players were particularly dominant inside, we mixed up our defenses against them and sometimes we had an answer, and sometimes we didn't. We shot the ball pretty well, but it hurt us at the end when Kaylin Nelson fouled out." UMass Dartmouth fell to 3-12 and 0-5 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while Plymouth State improved to 12-3 and 3-2. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Rhode Island College in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Tuesday evening. The Panthers will host Keene State Tuesday.
