UMass Dartmouth student-athletes set new record for academic achievement
June 25, 2010 Dartmouth - UMass Dartmouth student-athletes posted a new record of academic achievement this past semester when 41 students received Chancellor's List honors. A student must have a grade point average of 3.8 on a 4.0 to qualify for the Chancellor's List. The 41 Chancellor's List students broke the old record of 38 set during the Spring of 2008 semester. Last Spring's academic accomplishments are part of a grade review conducted each semester by the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Department. In total, 172 student athletes received academic honors with another 131 being named to the Dean's List with a grade point average of 3.2 or better. "The academic accomplishments of our student-athletes speaks volumes about their commitment to both their academic work and their respective sport" said UMass Dartmouth Athletic Director Ian Day. "The athletes at UMass Dartmouth typify what the NCAA Division III student-athlete is all about." The Corsair student athletes earning academic honors last Spring represented 23 of the 25 UMass Dartmouth teams. The Corsair football team had the most students earn both Chancellor's List and Dean's List with five and 11 respectively for a total of 16. Three teams tied with 13 student award winners, including men's track, women's track and women's swimming. Also hitting double figures with academic award winners were women's lacrosse with 12, field hockey with 10 along with women's swimming with 10. "As a department we are all very proud of the accomplishments our student-athletes continue to achieve while also participating in a rigorous schedule of varsity sports," said Day.
