NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-One member of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's equestrian team will represent the Corsairs at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association's National Finals next month.
Senior Adelaide Hopkins (Westport, MA) qualified by virtue of being named Reserve Champion at the Zone Finals, which were held at Mount Holyoke College April 10th.
Hopkins was accompanied to the zone competition by three UMass Horses-Eeyore, Abby and Freedom. "By providing horses for the event, Adelaide was able to warm up in the ring the day before the competition and get a feel for the arena that she would be competing in," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Meredith Arden. "There was also a chance that she would draw a horse she was already familiar with for the competition."
Although Hopkins did not draw one of the three horses accompanying her, competing instead on Viktor, a warmblood owned by Mount Holyoke College, she was successful. "Her horse really showed her off," said Arden. "He was a big, gentle giant and she rode him well enough so that she would be noticed."
"I could not be happier with my ride, and with the support I received from Coach Arden," said Hopkins. "This is an unbelievable opportunity, and I am so excited that my hard work for the season is being rewarded by being able to compete for UMass Dartmouth in the national finals."
The finals will be held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY between May 5th and 9th.
