Worcester State Outslugs Baseball, 19-4

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA- Visiting Worcester State used a pair of big innings to outslug the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team, 19-4, in a non-conference game at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday.

The Corsairs took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by freshman third baseman Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS/Eckerd) and a run-scoring single by senior catcher Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS). Worcester State came back with a run in the top of the second on a single by sophomore third baseman Dan Ubele (Tyngsboro, MA/Tyngsboro HS) and tied it in the fourth on an RBI single by freshman shortstop David Ruggiero (Peabody, MA/Bishop Fenwick HS). Freshman designated hitter Jimmy Cranston (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme HS) put UMD ahead, 3-2, with an infield grounder in the bottom of the fourth.

Worcester State took the lead for good by scoring six runs in the top of the fifth, Freshman center fielder Jeff Bolio (Oxford, MA/Oxford HS) doubled home two runs, sophomore catcher Joseph Carlier (Rockland, MA/Rockland HS) added a two-run single, and Ruggiero and freshman left fielder Cody Osburn (Fair Oaks, CA/Gilmour Academy) added RBI singles, to give the Lancers an 8-3 lead.

Freshman shortstop Nate Farias (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) singled home a run for the Corsairs in the sixth to make it 8-4.

The Lancers put the game away with seven runs in the top of the eighth. Corlier and Ubele each contributed run-scoring singles, sophomore right fielder Cory Loomer (Shrewsbury, MA/St. John's HS) added a two-run double, and junior second baseman Nick Gezotis (Westfield, MA/Westfield HS) drove in another run with a single.

"We didn't pitch, we didn't field, and we didn't hit," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Prince. "We didn't do a good job in any phase of the game, and we have to correct that."

Freshman right-hander Jared Kuzio (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) started for WSU pitched the first 5 2/3 innings and earned the victory, improving to 1-1. Junior right-hander Aaron Brunette (North Andover, MA/North Andover HS) started for UMD and took the loss, falling to 0-2.

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 11-8 with the defeat, while Worcester State improved to 5-16 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Southern Maine in a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday. Worcester State will visit Salem State Friday.
