NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team hit three home runs and exploded for 15 hits to defeat visiting Johnson & Wales, 15-3, in the Corsairs' 2013 home opener at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Tuesday.
The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning with a pair of unearned runs. UMD came back with five in the bottom of the second, four on a grand slam homer by senior third baseman Tyler White (Westport, MA/Westport HS/Massasoit CC).
Sophomore designated hitter Alex Newton (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy/Franklin Pierce), who drove in the Corsairs' first run in the second inning with a single, hit a solo homer in the third, as did senior catcher Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS), making it 7-2.
Sophomore center fielder Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS/Eckerd) doubled home a run in the fifth and freshman right fielder Connor Shaw (Goffstown, PA/Goffstown HS) singled home another to make it 9-2, and the Corsairs capped their afternoon with five more runs in the eighth. White finished with five RBIs, while Newton had three hits.
Freshman left hander Aaron Chouinard (Swansea, MA/Case HS) pitched 7 1/3 innings and earned the win, yielding six hits and one earned run, with junior Wayne Bolz (Billerica, MA/Billerica Memorial HS) finishing up. Junior right hander Rob Clark (Cranston, RI/Cranston West HS) started and took the loss for Johnson & Wales.
"I told our team that we go as our starting pitchers go, and Aaron Chouinard went out and threw 87 percent first pitch strikes, and worked ahead of guys the whole game," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Prince. "He pitched to poor contact, had great pace, and we took that momentum and used it. We got a bunch of two-out hits and two-out RBIs, and our performance was very encouraging."
The Corsairs improved to 3-6 with the victory, while the Wildcats fell to 9-4 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Framingham State Wednesday. Johnson & Wales will visit Mitchell Wednesday.
