WENHAM, MA - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team lost to host Gordon, 6-3, in a non-conference game at J. Tec White Field Tuesday.
Sophomore first baseman Alex Newton (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy/Franklin Pierce) singled home two runs with two out in the top of the first to give the Corsairs a 2-0 lead.
The Scots came back with five runs in the last of the second, three on a bases-loaded double by third baseman Carlos Pichardo and two more on shortstop Brian Harrington's two-run single. Left fielder Dillon Coleman's sacrifice fly in the third made it 6-2.
UMD freshman second baseman Taylor Cacciola (West Greenwich, RI/Exeter HS) hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to cut the Scots' lead to 6-3. The Corsairs got runners on base in both the eighth and ninth, but were unable to score.
Ryan Block worked the first 6 1/3 innings for Gordon to earn the win, improving his record to 1-0. Billy Jack Ryan worked the final 2 2/3 innings to record his first save of the season. Freshman right-hander Joshua Tombs (Kingstown, RI/South Kingstown HS), the first of four UMD pitchers, was charged with all six Gordon runs and took the loss, falling to 1-2. Freshmen Matt Russell (Townsend, MA/North Middlesex HS), George Bent (Barnstable, Ma/Barnstable HS/UMass) and Paul Mahoney (North Andover, MA/Whittier Tech) combined to pitch five innings of scoreless relief.
"We fell behind early, we had eight base runners on in the first couple of innings, but we had a poor approach at the plate," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Prince. "We never adjusted and we let their pitchers dictate the tempo of the game. Our relief pitchers did a nice job, but once we fell behind, we got away from our approach, and it didn't work out for us. We never had our leadoff runner on, and there were always a couple of outs before we mounted anything."
The Corsairs dropped to 7-11 with the defeat, while the Scots improved to 13-8 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when it visits Salve Regina Wednesday. Gordon will visit Williams Wednesday.
