Baseball Splits with Western Connecticut
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team split their Little East Conference doubleheader against Western Connecticut State at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Sunday.
The Corsairs took the nightcap, 11-4, after dropping the opener in seven innings, 13-2. The game was halted by the 10-run rule.
The Corsairs jumped out on top in the second game, scoring twice in the first inning on a two-run double by sophomore first baseman Alex Newton (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy/Franklin Pierce), then added six more in the second inning. Sophomore shortstop Nate Farias (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) doubled home one run, sophomore third baseman George Aggostini (Dighton, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/Marist) singled home two more, and senior catcher Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS), Newton, and freshman designated hitter Taylor Cacciola (West Greenwich, RI/Exeter HS) each knocked in a run with a hit.
Western Connecticut came back with four runs in the fifth. Junior second baseman Jeff John (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull HS) doubled home two runs, while senior designated hitter Chris Alberto (Trumbull, CT/Notre Dame-Fairfield) and senior center fielder Conor Bierfeldt (Torrington, CT/Torrington HS) each drove in a run.
The Corsairs put the game away with three in the eighth. Farias, freshman second baseman Reese Tanguay (Essex Junction, VT/Essex HS) and Newton each drove in runs with hits. Sophomore left-hander Nick Fuller (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) pitched eight innings for the win, improving his record to 2-4. Freshman Craig Frobel (Southington, CT/Southington HS) started for WCSU and took the loss, falling to 1-2.
In the opener, the Colonials exploded for six runs in the third and five more in the seventh to earn the victory.
The Corsairs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Worden's RBI single. WCSU tied it in the second on junior right fielder John Fracker's (Sandy Hook, CT/Newtown HS) run-scoring double, and then got five in the third.
Alberto, who pitched the first game, and Bierfeldt had RBI doubles, and senior third baseman Bill Eannotti (Shelton, CT/Notre Dame-Fairfield) followed with a three-run homer.
Aggostini singled home the Corsairs' other run in the fifth, but WCSU added five in the seventh, with the inning featuring two-run homers by Bierfeldt and Eannotti. Alberto went all the way for the win and improved to 4-2. Junior Karney Boff (Dighton, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) started for UMass Dartmouth and took the loss, falling to 0-1.
"The second game was really a back against the wall game for us, after we came out flat in game one," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Prince. "We didn't play the type of baseball we normally play. We didn't have our usual energy. It was nice to see our competitive nature come back in game two, and put those eight runs up early. Nick Fuller pitched a very good game against a team that swings the bats very well. He gave us everything we were looking for. He attacked hitters, got outs when we needed them, and pitched deep into the game."
The Corsairs are now 11-16 and 4-5 in the Little East Conference, while the Colonials are now 11-15 and 2-5 in LEC play. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when it hosts Babson Monday. Western Connecticut State will host Trinity Monday.
