Rhode Island College Holds Off Baseball, 5-3
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - Visiting Rhode Island College broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the top of the ninth, then held off the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team in the bottom of the ninth to earn a 5-3 Little East Conference victory at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Wednesday.
Trailing, 5-3, in the bottom of the ninth, the Corsairs got a leadoff walk from sophomore left fielder Luke Bomback (Swansea, MA/Case HS). Junior shortstop Nate Farias (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) flied out, senior designated hitter Tyler White (Westport, MA/Westport HS/Massasoit CC) singled, and sophomore outfielder Andy Ekstrom (Millbury, MA/Millbury HS) ran for him. Freshman second baseman Taylor Cacciola (West Greenwich, RI/Exeter HS) flied out, and sophomore center fielder Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS/Eckerd) struck out.
The Anchormen had taken a 5-3 lead with two runs in the top of the ninth. Junior first baseman Justin Rainville (Cumberland, RI/Woonsocket HS) reached on Farias' error and was sacrificed to second by senior third baseman Cody Ortega (Kissimmee, FL/Osceola HS). Senior right fielder Kyle Mann (West Warwick, RI/West Warwick HS) was intentionally walked, and sophomore center fielder Chris Siravo (Wakefield, RI/Prout School) singled to load the bases. Senior shortstop Zach Hubbard (Kissimmee, FL/Osceola HS) struck out, but sophomore second baseman Tyler Collins (Cranston, RI/Cranston West HS) singled up the middle, scoring Rainville and Mann to put RIC on top.
The Anchormen took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on Rainville's RBI double, but UMD senior catcher Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) singled home a run in the fourth to tie the game. RIC went ahead in the fifth, scoring on RBI singles by Hubbard and Collins. But UMD tied it in the sixth, scoring once on an error and tying the game on another run-scoring single by Worden. The Corsairs came close in the eighth, with Worden doubling with one out, but sophomore third baseman George Aggostini (Dighton, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/Marist) was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first base.
Junior left-hander C.J. Tsoumakas (Hope, RI/LaSalle Academy) pitched the first eight innings for RIC and earned the win, improving to 1-5. Senior right-hander David Hoey (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln HS), who pitched the ninth, earned his first save. Junior left-hander Nick Fuller (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS), who pitched the final three innings for the Corsairs in relief of freshman starter Aaron Chouinard (Swansea, MA/Case HS), took the loss and fell to 2-5.
"We didn't adjust well, we let their pitcher dictate the tempo of the game for the first five or six innings," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Prince. "We didn't make the proper adjustments to counteract what he was doing. When you play good teams, you have to make the plays and do the little things on the bases in order to win. Aaron threw well, he didn't have his best stuff but he ground it out, and Nick came in and pitched very well, the hit he gave up was a matter of inches."
The Corsairs dropped to 11-18 and 4-6 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while the Anchormen improved to 9-23 and 3-7 in LEC play with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Roger Williams in a doubleheader Thursday. RIC will host Babson Thursday.
