DANBURY, Conn. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team swept Western Connecticut State University in Little East Conference play on Saturday afternoon. UMass Dartmouth defeated Western Connecticut by a score of 4-2 in Game 1 and scored three late inning runs in Game 2 to seize a 5-4 win.
The Corsairs advanced to 14-14 on the season and 5-4 in the conference, while the Colonials slipped to 13-12 and 3-6.

Starting pitcher Nick Fuller (Acushnet, Mass.) went the distance for UMass Dartmouth. The junior limited the home team to two runs on eight hits in nine innings of work. Fuller earned his first win of the season with the complete game victory.
On the offensive side of the ball, junior Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, Mass.) was involved in every scoring play for visitors. At the plate, he went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. In the opening half inning, Medeiros reached home on a sacrifice fly from junior Alberto Vasquez (Roxbury, Mass.). In the top of the fifth, Medeiros singled to right, knocking in teammate Nate Farias (Fall River, Mass.) and advancing Connor Shaw (Goffstown, N.H.) to third. With a first-and-third situation, Medeiros forced a Colonial fielding error when attempting to steal second, allowing Shaw to swipe home and give the Corsairs a 3-0 lead. Clinging to a one run lead in the top of the eight, Medeiros reached on a base hit, swiped second base and eventually crossed the plate on a Vasquez sacrifice fly.
Western Connecticut brought the game within one (3-2) when Nick Briatico recorded an RBI triple and was knocked home by teammate Peter Nanos in the bottom of the sixth.

Faced with a 4-2 deficit in the top of the eighth, UMass Dartmouth scored three runs in the following two innings to capture the win.
Vasquez reached first in the eighth inning when he registered one of his three hits in the game. Junior Cory DeMedeiros (Fall River, Mass.) followed with his second base knock of the contest, advancing Vasquez 90-feet. With two runners in scoring position, designated hitter Alex Newton (Saco, Maine) blasted his second double of the game to score Vasquez and cut the Western Connecticut lead down to one (4-3).
In the top half of the ninth inning with two outs, junior George Agostini (Rehoboth, Mass.) stepped up to the plate with the tying run on second base. The junior came thru in the clutch and ripped a pitch to right field, tying the game at three all. Vasquez followed with a base hit, advancing Agostini to third. A Colonial wild pitch allowed for Agostini to swipe home for as the eventual game-winning run.
Senior Karney Boff (N. Dighton, Mass.) threw three and a third in relief to earn the win for UMass Dartmouth.
The Corsairs return to action on Monday, April 21, when UMass Dartmouth travels to Tufts for a pair of games. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
