Cronin, Tellier Shine in Baseball’s LEC Sweep of Colonials

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Junior Matt Cronin (Framingham, Mass.) hurled eight innings of one-run ball in game one, while the Corsair sluggers drilled a season-high six homers in game two to help the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth sweep the Little East Conference doubleheader against Western Connecticut at the UMD baseball field on Saturday afternoon.

The Basics

Score: UMass Dartmouth 4, Western Conn. 1 (Game One) | UMass Dartmouth 15, Western Conn. 1 (Game Two)

Records: Corsairs (16-11, 2-7 LEC) | Colonials (9-15, 0-9 LEC)

How it Happened

Corsairs 4, Colonials 1

The hosts contributed to their best offensive frame of the season – the second – on senior Zach Courier's (Mansfield, Mass.) base-hit just inside the left field line that plated classmate Kenny Michael (Norwood, Mass.). Continuing to mow-down the visiting Colonials, pitcher Matt Cronin (Framingham, Mass.) received additional run support in the fifth via sophomore Nate Tellier's (Attleboro, Mass.) RBI single to the opposite field doubled the Corsair advantage. The outfielder then came around to score on catcher Mitch Baker's (Braintree, Mass.) solid piece right back up the middle for a 3-0 lead to load the bases, queuing up a run-producing walk by Michael after working a full count.

Cronin completed his afternoon with eight innings of one-run ball (unearned), surrendering just five hits and a lone walk while striking out nine on 113 pitches. The junior ace's brilliant performance paved the way for freshman Logan Maitland (Tiverton, R.I.), who utilized only nine tosses for an easy 1-2-3 inning for the squad's first conference win of the year.

Corsairs 15, Colonials 1

The bottom of the order popped off for the Blue and Gold to jumpstart the scoring, striking in the second stanza once again. Out of the eight-hole, junior Erick Ramirez (Boston, Mass.) uncorked on a 0-2 delivery for a two-run shot to left and then was followed up by fellow middle-infielder Josh O'Neil's (Halifax, Mass.) solo dinger. Baker would add one more score for the squad, this time keeping it in the park for an RBI single to plate Tellier.

UMass Dartmouth sluggers flexed thrice more in the fourth, crossing the plate eight times. Junior Jose Vasquez (Roxbury, Mass.) pulled a three-run shot to left after another RBI single by Baker, followed up by a two-run dinger by sophomore Mike Knell (Dennis, Mass.). On a 2-2 delivery, Tellier drilled the squad's fifth round-tripper of the day with one of the two-run variety for a 12-1 Corsair advantage. The sophomore would come right back with another four-bagger in his next chance at the plate, going deep on a 3-1 offering for a solo shot.
