Corsairs Ranked No. 6 In NCAA New England Poll

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is ranked sixth in the second edition of the 2018 NCAA Division III Baseball New England Regional Rankings.  The Corsairs posted a 3-1 mark this past week, including a pair of wins over regionally-ranked opponents, but slipped one spot in the 14-team field.

Little East Conference rivals University of Southern Maine and University of Massachusetts Boston sit atop the NCAA New England rankings, followed by Babson College, Endicott College, and Salve Regina University.  The Corsairs are also joined by conference foes Rhode Island College (#12) and Eastern Connecticut State University (#14), respectively.

UMass Dartmouth (22-12) utilized several strong pitching performances to record consecutive victories over Rhode Island College, Suffolk University, and Eastern Connecticut.  Senior Ben Lodge (Blackstone, Mass.) scattered five hits and two runs over eight-plus innings of work to power the Corsairs to a 5-3 victory over the Anchormen on April 24.  Two days later, senior Zack Reid (New Dighton, Mass.) threw four clean innings in relief as UMass Dartmouth edged the Rams, 4-3. Junior Matt Cronin (Framingham, Mass.) turned in his strongest performance of the season, taking a no-hitter into the ninth inning. Freshman Logan Maitland (Tiverton, R.I.) earned his second save of the week to preserve a 5-1 victory over the Warriors.

The Corsairs boast one of the top pitching staffs in NCAA Division III, ranking among the national leaders in team earned run average (26th, 3.25) and strikeouts per nine innings (30th, 8.5).  Cronin has served as the ace of the staff, sporting a 5-1 record in nine appearances.  He leads the nation in earned run average (0.35), while ranking fifth in hits allowed per nine innings (4.73) and 13th in WHIP (0.86). The right-hander from Framingham, Mass. is second in the Little East Conference in strikeouts (55), third in wins (5), and fourth in innings pitched (51.1). Lodge and classmate Mac Curran (Lakeville, Mass.) have provided the UMass Dartmouth with a strong 1-2-3 punch atop the starting rotation.  Maitland has made an immediate impact with the Corsairs, anchoring the bullpen.  In 15 appearances, he has registered 28 strikeouts and five saves in 19.1 innings of work.

Sophomore Nate Tellier (Attleboro, Mass.) has powered the offensive attack, leading the club in hits (51), doubles (9), triples (3), RBI (30), while ranking second in batting average (.372). Junior Jose Vasquez is the team-leader in batting average (.384), while sharing the lead in home runs (4) with Tellier.  Sophomore Mitch Baker (Braintree, Mass.) has enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign, ranking third on the team in hits (40), doubles (6), home runs (2), and RBI (18).

UMass Dartmouth returns to action at 12pm on Friday, May 4, when the Corsairs travel to Keene State College (14-18, 4-8 LEC) for a Little East Conference doubleheader.
