WINTER HAVEN, FL-Junior right-hander Pat Lavey (Cranston, RI/Cranston East HS) pitched four scoreless innings in relief and junior third baseman John Granahan (Hanover, MA/Hanover HS/Southern Maine) doubled home the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team defeated Curry in 10 innings, 7-6, and earned a split of their doubleheader in the 2011 season opener for both teams Saturday at Chain O'Lakes Park in Winter Haven, FL, The Colonels won the opener, 8-2.
Lavey entered the game in the bottom of the seventh inning and blanked Curry, allowing the Corsairs to rally. Sophomore second baseman Ryan Levesque (Northridge, MA/Mount St. Charles Academy) singled home the tying runs in the top of the seventh inning, allowing UMass Dartmouth to draw even at 6-6. Three innings later, Granahan doubled home senior shortstop Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS) to put UMD ahead for good. Lavey got the win in relief of the starter, sophomore Mike St. Martin (Worcester, MA/Doherty HS).
"It was a good win," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "They had 30 wins last year, and they were knocking on the door for the NCAAs. Pat Lavey shut them down, he was lights out."
Curry took advantage of six errors and won the opener, 8-2. Senior right-hander Brian Pedrotti (Dalton, MA/Wahconah Regional HS) started and took the loss. "We didn't play well, we made too many errors" said Curran. "We gave them too many outs."
Both teams are now 1-1 after the split. The Corsairs will continue their spring trip when they play McDaniel Sunday. Curry will play St. Joseph's (Maine) Sunday.
