WINTER HAVEN, FL-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team first game at historic Chain O'Lakes Park was not an artistic success Sunday afternoon. Four Corsair errors in the fifth inning led to four unearned runs as Westfield State defeated UMass Dartmouth, 6-3, in the Russmatt Baseball Central Florida Invitational Tournament.
Senior left fielder Mike Mitchell (Boston, MA/Boston Latin HS) singled in a run for the Corsairs to tie the game in the fourth inning at 1-1 in the game played at the spacious ballpark that once served as the spring training homes of the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians. The Owls started their fifth-inning rally with a single by second baseman Pete Grillo and a bunt single by left fielder Brad King, followed by the first of two errors by UMass Dartmouth starting pitcher Tyler Noyes (So. Keene, NH/Keene HS). WSC hit only one ball out of the infield in the inning.
The Corsairs rallied in the ninth inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly by sophomore right fielder Pete Beksha (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) and an infield grounder by sophomore second baseman Anthony Fiorita (Reading, MA/St. John's Prep).
Noyes pitched the first six innings and took the defeat, falling to 0-1. Jesse Vermeersch, Curt Everett and Andrew Poliferno combined for a four-hitter for the Owls, who were picked to finish first in the Massaschusetts State College Athletic Conference's pre-season poll. Vermeersch allowed an unearned run and two hits in five innings and earned the win, improving to 1-0.
"Tyler Noyes pitched well, but he made two errors in the fifth," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "He only made 43 pitches through the first four innings. We are still not hitting the ball yet, hopefully, we can pick up our hitting tomorrow."
The Corsairs played Boston College at Chain O'Lakes Park in 1989. "It was nice," said Curran. "Indiana was getting ready to play Central Michigan when we were finished."
UMD dropped to 0-3 with the defeat, while Westfield State improved to 2-1 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will play Fontbonne in a doubleheader Monday.
