LEESBURG, FL-Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute jumped out to a 9-0 lead and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team, 12-3, on the penultimate day of their 2011 spring trip Thursday at Pat Thomas Stadium.

The Corsairs, who were limited to five hits, didn't score until the seventh inning. Freshman shortstop Bedward Ortiz (Worcester, MA/Doherty HS) had two hits for UMass Dartmouth. Senior right-hander Brian Pedrotti (Dalton, MA/Wahconah Regional HS) started and took the loss.

"We were tired, and we didn't play well," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "We made too many errors, which caused us to give up several unearned runs. We didn't do anything well."

The Corsairs fell to 5-3 with the defeat, while the Engineers improved to 5-3 with the victory. UMD will conclude their spring trip when they play a doubleheader against MCLA Friday. RPI will play Wheaton Friday.
