NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting UMass Boston scored 11 runs in their final two at-bats in the first game and used a seven-run rally in the fifth inning to break the nightcap open en route to a sweep of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team in a Little East Conference doubleheader at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Sunday. The Beacons won the opener, 14-8, before winning the second game, 11-1, in a game ended after seven innings by the 10-run rule.
The Corsairs held an 8-7 lead with two out in the top of the ninth inning of the opener when freshman center fielder Mark McCormack (Shelton, CT) hit a two-run homer to give UMB the lead for good. Sophomore third baseman Dan Noonan (Westport, MA) singled in two more runs, and junior first baseman Connor Reinfurt (Manchester, NH) hit a two-run homer.
UMass Dartmouth had taken a 6-0 lead after two innings. Junior center fielder Jeff Macchi (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) singled in a run, freshman second baseman Dan Demello (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) doubled home another, and sophomore catcher Zac Talis (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the first inning. Sophomore first baseman Chris Benevides (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) and freshman right fielder Pete Beksha (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) had RBI singles and senior designated hitter Casey Askeland had a run-scoring double in the second.
Freshman right fielder Ty Buccetti (Wallingford, CT) singled in a run for the Beacons in the fourth, but Talis doubled home another for the Corsairs in the fifth. McCormack singled in a pair for the Beacons in the sixth, but the Corsairs got a run on a sacrifice fly by DeMello.
Junior Alex Simas (Wareham, MA), who limited UMass Dartmouth to two hits over the final seven innings, earned the victory in relief and improved to 1-2. Sophomore Shane Campbell (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS), the third of four Corsair pitchers, took the loss and fell to 1-4.
McCormack and Reinfurt homered in the nightcap for the Beacons, and Reinfurt finished with three RBIs, while McCormack and sophomore second baseman Ryan Walsh (Newton, MA) had two apiece. Sophomore catcher Matt Ryan (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge HS) hit a solo homer in the fifth for the Corsairs' only run. Junior Mike Andriano (Massapequa, NY) pitched a five-hitter and earned the win, improving to 1-2, while UMD sophomore starter Brian Pedrotti (Dalton, MA/Wahconah Regional HS) took the loss and fell to 0-3.
"We didn't make the plays, and we didn't close out the first game," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "This conference is a real meat grinder, and UMass Boston can really hit the ball."
UMD is now 5-15 and 3-2 in the Little East Conference, while UMass Boston is now 6-14 and 3-1. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Babson Monday. The Beacons will visit Framingham State Tuesday.
