BABSON PARK, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team got 21 hits and defeated host Babson, 14-4, in a non-conference at Govoni Field Monday.
The Corsairs, who jumped out in front when senior center fielder Jeff Macchi (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) hit a two-run homer in the top of the first inning, scored 10 runs in their first five at bats. Junior designated hitter Matt Ryan (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge HS) hit a two-run homer and junior first baseman Anthony Fiorita (North Reading, MA/St. John's Prep) hit a sacrifice fly in the third, junior catcher Zak Talis (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) hit a two-run single and Fiorita knocked in another run with a single in the fourth, and Macchi hit another two-run homer in the fifth.
Freshman right-hander Aaron Brunette (North Andover, MA/North Andover HS) pitched the first 6 2/3 innings for the Corsairs, allowing two runs and six hits and earning the victory to improve his record to 1-0. Macchi finished with four hits and four RBIs, Talis had five hits, including a double, and drove in three runs, and Ryan had two hits and three RBIs. Babson starter Jeff Browne took the loss and fell to 2-1.
"I was very pleased with the way we played, we are coming on," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "We hit the ball very well, and Aaron Brunette did a great job. The wnd was blowing out, and we made the plays all day, we didn't make any errors until the ninth inning."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 10-5 with the victory, while Babson fell to 15-4 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Framingham State Wednesday..
