NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Junior Shane Campbell (Marlborough, MA/Marlborough HS), senior Niall Mitchell (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) and junior Brian Pedrotti (Dalton, MA/Wahconah Regional HS) combined for a one-hitter as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team won for the fourth consecutive time, defeating visiting Framingham State, 4-0, in a non-conference game at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Wednesday
The only hit of the game for the Rams came when junior left fielder J.J. Sorensen (Westerly, RI/Ursinus) doubled in the third inning. Corsair pitchers issued two walks, and UMD committed two errors.
Senior left fielder Tom LaDore (Milford, CT/Foran HS) gave UMass Dartmouth a 1-0 lead in the second inning when his sacrifice fly drove home junior catcher Zak Talis (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS), who had doubled. Talis singled home two runs in the third, and junior shortstop Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS) drove in the final Corsair run with a single in the fourth.
Campbell worked six innings, allowing a hit and a walk and striking out six Rams, earning the victory and improving his record to 1-0. Mitchell followed with two scoreless innings, and Pedrotti pitched the ninth. Junior Justin Wojcik (Dracut, MA/Greater Lowell Tech) started for Framingham State and pitched the first seven innings, taking the loss and falling to 0-1.
"Shane Campbell did a great job," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "He established his fastball, threw his slider for a strike, and gave up one hit. We only walked two guys. Realistically, our pitching has dictated the last four games."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 11-5 with the victory, while Framingham State fell to 9-9 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Southern Maine in a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday. The Rams will visit St. Joseph (Maine) Thursday.
