Late Rally Gives Baseball Win at Rhode Island College

PROVIDENCE, RI-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning and came from behind to defeat host Rhode Island College, 8-5, in a Little East Conference game at Anchorman Field Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomore right fielder Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) started the game-winning rally when he led off the eighth inning with a single. Worden moved to second on a walk to junior first baseman Anthony Fiorita (North Reading, MA/ St. John's Prep), went to third on a bunt single by freshman center fielder Shane Leupold (Newington, CT/Newington HS). and scored on a throwing error by RIC relief pitcher Eric Blanchard. Senior catcher Matt Ryan (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge HS) pinch hit for freshman left fielder Wayne Bolz (Billerica, MA/Billerica HS) and greeted reliever Josh Lynch with a sacrifice fly to score Fiorita and tie the game. Senior shortstop Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS) and freshman designated hitter Bedward Ortiz both doubled (Worcester, MA/Doherty HS), with Ortiz' hit scoring McDermott and Leupold to give UMD a 7-5 lead. Senior catcher Zac Talis (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) singled home Ortiz to make it 8-5 and cap the rally.

The Anchormen took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, Right fielder Ronnie Bracchi hit a solo homer, and second baseman Kyle Allaire added a run-scoring single. The Corsairs cut into the lead in the fourth. Junior third baseman John Granahan (Hanover, MA/Hanover HS/Southern Maine).singled, moved up on an infield out and an error, and scored on Leupold's sacrifice fly.

RIC went up 3-1 in the fifth when second baseman Mike Giustino doubled, moved to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Dan Hopkins.

The Corsairs tied it in the seventh. McDermott beat out an infield hit, moved up on an infield out, and scored on a single by junior second baseman Dan Demello (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS). Talis doubled home DeMello to tie the score.

RIC went ahead for the last time in the bottom of the seventh. Center fielder Kevin Carey walked, stole second and scored when Giustino homered off the left field foul pole.

"It was a good win, we played well," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "Matt Ryan pinch hit and hit a big sacrifice fly, Ryan McDermott and Bedward Ortiz got big hits, and (senior) Chris Contre (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater HS) pitched well and deserved to win. We minimized our mistakes early in the game, we were able to stay within reach, and then we got a big inning."

Contre pitched seven innings and got the win, improving to 2-1. Junior Pat Lavey (Cranston, RI/Cranston East HS) pitched two scoreless innings to earn his fourth save. Blanchard, who relieved started David Hoey in the seventh, took the loss and fell to 0-1.

The Corsairs improved to 9-12 and 3-2 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Anchormen dropped to 9-11 and 2-3 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Salve Regina Wednesday. RIC will visit Johnson & Wales Wednesday.
