NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team lost to visiting Bridgewater State, 9-5, in a non-conference game at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by junior Ian Williams (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS). UMD answered in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by junior Dan Demello (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) that scored senior Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS). The Bears regained a 2-1 lead when sophomore Tyler Dennis (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton HS) scored on a RBI single by junior Corey Batista (Fall River, MA/Bishop Connolly HS). In the top of the fourth, after being issued a walk and stealing second base, Bears senior Matt Greenberg (Norwell, MA/Norwell HS) scored on a single by Batista, who later came around to score, giving BSU a 4-1 lead. Both teams added a run in the fifth inning. The Bears dealt a crushing blow to the Corsairs in the top of the seventh when Greenberg blasted a three-run home run to deep centerfield, putting Bridgewater up 8-2. The Corsairs battled back scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh on RBI singles by McDermott and sophomore Ryan Levesque (Northbridge, MA/Mount St. Charles Academy). The Corsairs had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, but only scored one run on a bases-loaded walk to senior Matt Ryan (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge HS), resulting in the 9-5 loss for UMD.
"We came out flat today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "We didn't come to play today. Offensively, we didn't hit the ball and we didn't take good at-bats. We are going to face tough pitching tomorrow so we better be ready to go. We'll need a better effort and more excitement going into tomorrow's game against Western Connecticut."
The Corsairs dropped to 10-16 with the loss, while the Bears improved to 14-11 with the win. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Western Connecticut State in a Little East Conference doubleheader Friday. Bridgewater State will host Worcester State in a MASCAC doubleheader Friday.
