BRIDGEWATER, MA-Host Bridgewater State scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team, 18-8, in a non-conference game at Alumni Field Thursday.
The Bears got two-run singles from Matt Greenberg and Brad Koneski and a two-run triple from Brendon Elliot in the first inning to take an early lead. The Corsairs came right back with three runs in the top of the second, scoring on an RBI single by senior designated hitter Casey Askeland (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) and run-scoring doubles by senior left fielder Mike Mitchell (Boston, MA/Boston Latin HS) and sophomore catcher Matt Ryan (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge HS). BSC scored three runs in the second inning and two more in the third to take a 12-3 lead.
UMass Dartmouth got a run in the top of the sixth on Ryan's run-scoring single, another in the eighth on an error, and three more in the ninth on a solo homer by Askeland and Ryan's two-run home run. Ryan finished with four hits and four runs batted in; Mitchell had three hits, and Askeland two RBIs. BSC's Elliot hit for the cycle, and had five hits and eight RBIs.
"When you face a good team, and don't get off to a good start, it can be over quickly," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "We came back, but every time we came back, they got some more runs."
Jeff Sarahs, who pitched the first seven innings for the Bears, earned the victory and improved to 2-2. Sophomore Scott Tibbetts (Hanover, MA/Hanover HS), the first of four Corsair pitchers, took the loss, falling to 1-2.
UMD dropped to 7-22 with the defeat, while Bridgewater State improved to 19-13 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference game Friday.
