BRIDGEWATER, MA-Freshman left-hander Nick Fuller (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and senior right-hander Niall Mitchell (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) combined for an eight-hit shutout as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team blanked host Bridgewater State, 8-0, in a non-conference game at Alumni Park Monday.
Each pitcher allowed four hits, none of them for extra bases. Fuller pitched the first 5 2/3 innings and earned the victory, improving his record to 1-1, while Mitchell, who relieved with two out and two on in the bottom of the sixth, finished and earned his first save of the season.
The Corsairs jumped on top with two runs in the fourth inning. Junior catcher Zak Talis (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) singled home one run, while senior left fielder Tom LaDore singled home another. Junior catcher Matt Ryan (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge HS) doubled the lead with a two-run homer in the sixth. Talis singled home a run and LaDore hit a sacrifice fly for another in the seventh, and Ryan doubled home a run and sophomore Steve Lajoie (Gardner, MA/Gardner HS/Dean College) drove in another with a sacrifice in the ninth.
"We got great pitching, and we got the hits when we needed them," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "Nick Fuller and Nial Mitchell both pitched very well, and Matt Ryan and Zak Talis hit the ball well for us. I was very pleased with the win."
The Corsairs improved to 18-12 with the victory, while the Bears dropped to 16-15 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Brandeis Tuesday.
