GORHAM, ME-Senior catcher Matt Ryan (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge HS) hit two home runs and drove in five runs, and junior third baseman John Granahan (Hanover, MA/Hanover HS/Southern Maine) singled home the winning run in the top of the ninth inning as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team came from behind to defeat host Southern Maine, 8-7, in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader at the USM Baseball Field Friday. The Huskies won the nightcap, 18-8 in seven innings.
The Huskies got a two-run single from right fielder Nick Grady in the first inning of the opener and took an early 4-0 lead. The Corsairs got a run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by freshman second baseman Bedward Ortiz (Worcester, MA/Doherty HS), and Ryan hit a two-run homer in the sixth.
Catcher Jordan Berthiaume doubled home a run for USM in the sixth, and shortstop Anthony Pisani's sacrifice fly in the seventh gave the Huskies a 6-3 lead.
Ryan's three-run homer and an RBI single by senior first baseman Anthony Fiorita (North Reading, MA/St. Johns Prep) allowed the Corsairs to take the lead in the top of the eighth. Left fielder David Ricker singled home the tying run for USM in the bottom of the eighth, but senior shortstop Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS) led off the ninth with a single, was sacrificed to second by Ortiz, and scored on a two-out hit by Granahan. Junior right-hander Pat Lavey (East Cranston, RI/Cranston HS), who relieved senior starter Brian Pedrotti (Dalton, MA/Wahconah Regional HS) in the eighth, earned the win and improved to 5-1. Dustin Stanton took the loss in relief and fell to 4-4.
Granahan's RBI single and a bases-loaded walk by junior left fielder Dan Demello (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) staked UMD to a 2-0, first-inning lead in the nightcap, Ryan's two-run homer in the second made it 4-0, and DeMello's sacrifice fly in the third made it 5-0. But the Huskies got a run in the third and scored 17 runs in their final four at bats, getting a homer and five RBIs from Grady and home runs from third baseman Forrest Chadwick, first baseman Mike Eaton and second baseman Troy Thibodeau. Designated hitter Brett Barrett's single in the bottom of the seventh ended the game due to the 10-run rule. Brennan Perry, who relieved starter Nick Douglass in the third inning, earned the win and improved to 1-1. UMD senior starter Shane Campbell (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS) started and took the loss. De Mello had three RBIs in the nightcap for the Corsairs, while Ryan, who had two, finished the day with seven runs batted in.
"We came back in the first game," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "We hit the ball well, and Pat Lavey came in and shut them down and got the win. Matt Ryan had a great day. In the second game, we took the lead, but they got rolling and we just couldn't stop them."
The Corsairs are now 15-20 and 8-6 in the Little East Conference, while the Huskies are 20-16 and 6-8 in LEC play. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Suffolk Monday. Southern Maine will visit Bates Saturday.
