NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-For the first time in a while, a member of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team will get an opportunity to play collegiate summer baseball at one of the highest levels.
Junior outfielder Jeff Macchi (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) has signed a short-term agreement with the New Bedford Bay Sox, who will begin their 2009 season Thursday in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
Macchi batted .375 with 11 doubles, three triples and two home runs for the Corsairs during the 2009 season, his third with UMass Dartmouth and his second as the regular center fielder. He scored 34 runs, drove in 31, had a slugging percentage of .535, an on-base percentage of .436, and stole 13 bases in 14 attempts. He had four assists in center field, and played errorless baseball.
Macchi joined the baseball team after starting all 31 games at guard for the UMass Dartmouth basketball team this season. He averaged 11.5 points and 4.9 rebounds, averaged 2.71 steals per game, and was named to the Little East Conference All-Defensive Team.
"It's a good opportunity for Jeff, he gets to show them what he can do, and maybe get a chance to stick," said UMass Dartmouth Head Baseball Coach Bob Curran. "He's real excited, and I'm happy for him."
