BRIDGEWATER, MA-The UMass Dartmouth men's basketball team fell to host Bridgewater State, 94-82 in a non-conference game at the Adrian Tinsley Center Tuesday evening.
The Corsairs turned the ball over eight times in the first eight minutes of the game as the Bears raced out to an early 20-4 lead. UMD would come back and end the half scoring on three of their last four possessions to enter the half trailing 47-31.
The Corsairs battled back in the second half, cutting the lead to single digits when sophomore guard Mike Rotando (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/PPB HS/Bloomfield) knocked down a trey with just over four and a half minutes to play to make the score 79-70.
The Bears would respond by scoring on their next two chances and would knock down key free throws down the stretch to hold off the surging Corsairs.
UMD fell despite having six players score in double in figures, while Bridgewater State had five players score at least 11 points.
UMass Dartmouth was led by once again by junior guard John Genkos (Worcester, MA/Doherty HS) who poured in 18 points on 4-9 shooting from beyond the arc. Rotando and sophomore center Alex Rodrigues (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) each scored 14 points for the Corsairs.
"We got down early in the first half, and I thought we played better in the second half," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. "We didn't play well enough to win the game. John Genkos played well, and Abi Akanni (Fitchburg, MA/Fitchburg HS) did a good job coming off the bench."
UMass Dartmouth fell to 0-4 with the defeat, while Bridgewater State improved to 2-2 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Keene State in the Little East Conference opener Friday evening. The Bears will visit Wheaton Saturday.
