Late Men's BB Rally Falls Short Against Southern Maine, 82-78
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA–The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's basketball team dropped a hard fought battle against visiting Southern Maine, 82-78, in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday.
The Corsairs fought their way back from a 24 point deficit with 13: 51 to play and pulled to within 80-78 with 8.4 ticks on the game clock when senior guard John Genkos (Worcester, MA/Doherty) drilled a three pointer with a man in his face. The Huskies were fouled on the ensuing inbounds play and made both of their free throws with six seconds left and a UMD three pointer missed the mark as time expired.
The Corsairs found themselves in a big hole as the Huskies opened the second half 15-6 run that was started and ended with a jumper by senior guard Mike Poulin (Readfield, ME/Maranacook), making the score 66-42. UMD chipped away and finally got the deficit down to single digits at 80-71 when freshman forward Abi Akanni (Fitchburg, MA/Fitchburg) hit two free throws. A jumper by Akanni whittled the lead to seven with 1:34 left, and Genkos followed with a fast break layup at 1:18 cutting it to five. Genkos would make it interesting with his three-pointer from the corner, but senior guard Alex Kee (Bath, ME/Morse) iced it with a pair of free throws.
The Corsairs shot 41.4 per cent from the field on 27-63 shooting, including 7-21 behind the arc. The Huskies shot 47 per cent from the field, making 31 of 66 attempts and hitting 9 of 16 from three point land. The Corsairs out rebounded Southern Maine 44-38, but turned the ball over nine more times than did the Huskies (22 to 13).
Sophomore guard Mike Rotando (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/P.P.B.) led the Corsairs with 21 points. He was joined in double figures by sophomore forward Alex Rodrigues (Fall River, MA/Durfee) with 12 points and Akanni with 10 points. The Huskies were led by Kee, who had a game-high 33 points. Junior guard Conor Sullivan (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) scored 13 points, and junior forward James Odneal (Pontiac, MI/Bottineau) contributed 11 points.
UMass Dartmouth fell to 2-11 and 0-5 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while Southern Maine improved to 9-6 and 4-1 in the LEC with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Rhode Island College Tuesday evening in the second half of a Little East Conference doubleheader. The Huskies will host UMass Boston Tuesday.
