GORHAM, ME – Freshman forward Wale Abraham (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) scored a game-high 20 points and had a team-high eight rebounds to help the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's basketball team past host Southern Maine, 82-74, at Hill Gymnasium in the final Little East Conference game of the regular season for both teams Saturday.
Sophomore guard Mike Rotando (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach HS/Bloomfield) added 14 points for the Corsairs and junior guard John Genkos (Northampton, MA/Northampton HS) chipped in 10.
The Huskies were led by junior guard Conor Sullivan (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) who had a team-high 19 points. Fellow guard Alex Kee (Bath, ME/Morse) and Mike Poulin (Readfield, ME/Maranacook) both contributed 10 points for USM.
UMD held a 44-36 edge on the glass and outshot USM 45 percent to 43.5 percent. The Corsairs were stellar both from behind the arc, (7-for-16, 43.8 percent) and from the foul line (21-for-26, 80.8 percent).
"It was a good win," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. "Wale did a good job scoring. Most of his points came from the inside, although he hit a big jumper from the foul line down the stretch when we were trying to hold the lead. Jake Laga did a good job on defense, and John Genkos hit a couple of big jumpers, so, hopefully, we have some momentum going into Tuesday night's first round playoff game at Rhode Island College."
The Corsairs move to 5-20 overall and 2-12 in the Little East Conference with the win, while the Huskies fall to 14-11 and 8-6 in LEC play with the loss. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Rhode Island College Tuesday evening in the first round of the LEC playoffs. Southern Maine will host a playoff game Tuesday evening.
