SALEM, Mass.-- University of Massachusetts Dartmouth freshman Ryan Walsh (North Dighton, Mass.) scored a career-high 20 points to pace the Corsairs, but it wasn't enough as home standing Salem State University earned an 89-73 victory this afternoon at Twohig Gymnasium.
Walsh connected on 7-for-15 from the field to pace three UMass Dartmouth student-athletes in scoring. Junior Jake Laga (Northampton, Mass.) netted 12 points, while hauling in a team-best eight rebounds. Junior Alex Rodrigues (Fall River, Mass.) also reached double digits with 11 points. Freshman Tucker Bouchard (Kingston, Mass.) handed out six assists.
Junior Hamed Akanni (Fitchburg, Mass.) led all scorers with 21 points, knocking down 9-for-14 from the floor. Senior Chris Parenteau (Lancaster, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while senior Andrew White (Medford, Mass.) finished with 12 points, seven assists, and five steals.
Salem State (2-2) came out firing on all cylinders with a 13-0, run early in the first, sparked by an Anthony Hodges' (Worcester, Mass.) jumper. Laga netted 10 of his 12 points in the first half to keep the Corsairs within striking distance, cutting a 17-point deficit to 12, 42-30, before the half.
In the second, White and Akanni combined for 17 points as the Vikings built a 19-point lead. The hosts shot 53.6 percent (37-for-69) from the field, while forcing 20 UMass Dartmouth turnovers.
UMass Dartmouth (2-2) will return to action at 7 p.m. on December 3, when the Corsairs face Worcester State at Clark University.
