Corsairs Slip Past Golden Tornadoes, 90-80

MIAMI – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's basketball team led wire-to-wire this evening en route to a 90-80 victory over Geneva College (Pa.) in the 2013 Adidas Holiday Slam tournament at Alumni Gymnasium on the campus of the Florida Christian School.

The Corsairs won for the fourth time in their past five games to raise their record to 6-3, while the Golden Tornadoes spiraled to 4-6.

UMass Dartmouth utilized a well-balanced scoring attack that saw five student-athletes reach double figures. Sophomore Abi Akanni (Fitchburg, Mass.) poured in 17 points to lead the Corsairs, while freshman Tucker Bouchard (Kingston, Mass.) nearly produced a double-double with 15 points and a career-high nine assists. Sophomore Steven Handy (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) recorded 12 points, while junior Jake Laga (Northampton, Mass.) and freshman Ryan Walsh (North Dighton, Mass.) each scored 11 points.

Freshman Chaese Vaudrin (Uniontown, Ohio) paced Geneva with a double-double, consisting of 17 points and 10 assists. Senior Trevor York (Kokomo, Ind.) scored a game-high 19 points, while senior Jordan Harbison (Renfrew, Pa.) recorded 14 points, including four 3-pointers, for the Golden Tornadoes.

UMass Dartmouth shot an efficient 53.1 percent (34-for-64) from the field. The Corsairs forced 24 Geneva turnovers that led to 34 UMass Dartmouth points.  The Golden Tornadoes outrebounded the Corsairs, 35-25. 

UMass Dartmouth will close out 2013 tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m., when the Corsairs face Goucher College (Md.) in the final game of the 2013 Adidas Slam tournament. Earlier this afternoon, the Gophers were defeated by Eastern, 83-76.
