DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Freshman Atakan Akcam (Hoosac Falls, N.Y.) buried a three-point shot from the corner with two-tenths of a second remaining on Tuesday evening, lifting the UMass Dartmouth men's basketball squad to a 91-88 victory over the visiting Husson Eagles.
Akcam's only three-point try broke an 88-88 tie that followed a nearly ten-minute Husson lead to close the second half. The Corsairs erased a nine-point lead in the last four minutes, capitalizing on free throws and a three-pointer from Abi Akanni (Fitchburg, Mass.) to complete the comeback.
Following a made free-throw apiece from freshman Nick Portelance (Fairhaven, Mass.) and Husson's Raheem Anderson (Miramar, Fla.), the Corsairs made the most of the last 10 seconds, as Akanni found Akcam in the corner.
Husson held a 43-42 lead in the first half, as the Eagles earned 15 points from their bench and saw 18 points from Anderson. Senior Jordan Rezendes (Onset, Mass.) was electric in the first stanza, dropping 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting and 3-of-4 from three point land. The first half saw seven lead changes, with UMD securing 13 points on nine Eagle turnovers.
UMass Dartmouth came out firing to begin the second half, scoring the first five points and regaining the lead for the first four minutes until Husson regained control. For the Eagles, Trevon Butler (Waterbury, Conn.) responded in a big way, scoring 21 points of his own in the second half after registering only a bucket in the first.
Rezendes led all scorers, finishing with 33 and a double-double as he added 10 assists. Anderson was close behind, scoring 30 points.
Portelance added 17 points with seven boards, while junior Jon Robinson (Chatham, Mass.) added 13. Akanni led UMD with nine boards, while Rezendes, Portelance and junior Jahleel Moise (Brockton, Mass.) all snagged seven.
Husson's Justin Martin (Winslow, Maine) led all players with 11 boards, adding eight points, while Butler finished with 23 points and juniors Zach Curran (Washington D.C.) and Eli Itkin (Pawtucket, R.I. ) each scored nine.
The Corsairs will return after the holiday break, hitting the road for the first time as they travel to meet Worcester State on Tuesday, Dec. 1.
