MIAMI, Fla. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth senior Jordan Rezendes (Onset, Mass.) registered a triple-double, but it was not enough, as Plattsburgh State outlasted the Corsairs 99-95 this afternoon at the HoopMIA D3 Holiday Shootout.
Rezendes paced the UMass Dartmouth (5-5) offensive attack with a game-high 32 points, registering his fifth outing on the season thus far with 30-plus points. Additionally, he led all players with 12 boards and matched his season-high with 10 assists.
Junior Jon Robinson (Chatham, Mass.) achieved a season-high scoring mark with 21 points, while freshman Nick Portelance (Fairhaven, Mass.) posted his second-straight double-double, dropping 17 points while grabbing 10 rebounds.
Plattsburgh State held control to begin the game, leading by as much as eight in the first 10 minutes. The Corsairs consistently responded, however, tying the game at 31 at the 7:58 mark with a Portelance layup following consecutive three-pointers from Rezendes and junior Tom Keyes (Fall River, Mass.).
That would spark a 20-6 Cardinal run over the next six minutes, as senior Kyle Richardson (Baldwin, N.Y.) registered most of his 22 first-half points during the span to give Plattsburg State a 51-42 advantage at the break.
The Cardinals held that lead through the opening 10 minutes of the second stanza, increasing the lead by as much as 16 with 12:08 remaining following back-to-back long range buckets from Edward Correa (Bronx, N.Y.).
Rezendes then went to work much as he has all season beginning at the 8:33 mark, scoring 15 of the Corsairs' next 25 points to pull UMass Dartmouth even at 86-all with five minutes left. Both teams then traded buckets, with the Cardinals able to fend off the Corsairs with free throws from freshman Jonathan Patron (Huntington, N.Y.) and a missed Rezendes three-pointer that would have given UMass Dartmouth the lead with just seconds remaining.
Patron led the Cardinals with 27 points, while Richardson finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Corsair junior Abi Akanni (Fitchburg, Mass.) contributed 14 points to UMass Dartmouth's offensive attack. For the game, Plattsburgh State shot 37-of-75 (49 percent) from the field, while UMD went 39-of-81 (48 percent) on the game.
UMass Dartmouth will return to the court after the holiday break on Jan. 2, when the Corsairs travel to Salem State for a 1 p.m. tip.
