DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Senior Jordan Rezendes (Onset, Mass.) became the 47th player in UMass Dartmouth men's basketball history to eclipse the 1,000 career point mark on Wednesday evening, scoring 22 points in the Corsairs' loss to LEC foe Eastern Connecticut, 80-72.
Rezendes nearly achieved a triple double on the evening, additionally registering 10 rebounds and nine assists to lead UMass Dartmouth in all categories. His 1,000th point came early in the second half as he converted a three-pointer and bested the 12 points needed to equal the total.
Midway through only his second season in a Corsair uniform, Rezendes has played in only 40 games for UMass Dartmouth. Currently, he is averaging 25.3 points per game for his career and 29.1 per outing so far this season. He currently sits third nationally in scoring and 3-pointers (4.69) a game.
Eastern Connecticut rises to 10-5 on the season with the victory and remains beaten in Little East Conference play at 4-0. The Warriors were guided on the evening by senior Trachone Preston (Enfield, Conn.), who led all scorers with 25 points with four 3-pointers and a perfect 11-of-11 performance from the foul line.
The Warriors were unfazed by the Corsairs' early success in the first half, bouncing back in the second stanza with sharpshooting of their own, going 13-of-27 (48 percent) from the field to achieve the comeback in the final five minutes.
UMass Dartmouth exploded out of the gate, starting the night with a 10-4 lead thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from junior Jon Robinson (Chatham, Mass.). The Corsairs extended the lead to as much as seven in the opening minutes thanks to another long-range bucket from Robinson.
Eastern Connecticut hung within swinging distance throughout the first half, taking its first lead of the night with only 1:49 remaining after hovering within four points for several minutes. A 3-pointer from Preston put the visitors up 39-37, but two foul shots and a responding long-range basket from Rezendes gave the hosts a narrow 40-39 advantage heading into the locker room.
The Warriors held slight control to begin the second half, leading by as much a six at the 16:52 mark. The tides then turned, as junior Abi Akanni (Fitchburg, Mass.) put the hosts back on top with 13:47 left. A narrow Corsair advantage was then maintained until the final five minutes, when a foul shot from Hugh Lindo (Enfield, Conn.) gave the visitors a lead for the next two and a half minutes.
Two Rezendes free throws put UMass Dartmouth back within one, until a Lindo layup sparked the Warriors' closing run.
Lindo finished with a double-double, recording 19 points with 15 boards, while sophomore Tarchee Brown (Rockville, Conn.) rounded out the Warriors in double-figures with 18 points while dishing out four assists.
Robinson registered 13 points in the first half and finished with 19 for the game, including 3-of-4 from long range, while Akanni contributed 13 points on the night. Freshman Arinze Obiora (Hyde Park, Mass.) nearly reached a double-double, reaching career-highs with 10 points and nine boards.
UMass Dartmouth will next make the trek to Gorham, Maine to meet Southern Maine on Saturday with game time slated for 3 p.m. Eastern Connecticut will look to extend its LEC unbeaten streak at home at the same time against UMass Boston.
