MEDFORD, Mass. – Despite senior Jordan Rezendes (Onset, Mass.) nearly recording a triple-double, the Corsairs fell to Tufts on the road Tuesday evening, 101-82.
The Corsairs fall to 11-9 overall, while to the Jumbos improve to 16-4 on the year.
Rezendes led the Corsairs as he has in every contest this season, scoring 26 points while handing out 10 assists and snagging seven rebounds.
Freshman Nick Portelance (Fairhaven, Mass.) came within a rebound of his 11th double-double of the year. His nine rebounds tied for the game-high on the evening. Junior Chris Mendes (Somerset, Mass.) was the third UMass Dartmouth player to hit double-digits on the evening, posting a Corsair career high 15 points.
For the Jumbos, four out of the five starters registered in double figures. Sophomore Vincent Pace (Bridgewater, N.J.) paced the offense with a game-high 27 points and chipped in nine rebounds. Senior Ryan Spadaford (Rockville Centre, NY.) added 23 points with four baskets from behind the arc, while junior Tom Palleschi (Haverill, Mass.) contributed 18 and junior Tarik Smith (Bronx, NY.) 15.
The first half featured close play, as the Jumbos were only able to muster a maximum lead of nine points. A Rezendes layup pulled the visitors within five with 1:17 remaining, but a responding Smith layup and a Pace dunk extended Tufts' lead to 49-40.
The hosts would increase that margin and eventually pull away in the second half, going on a 14-2 run in the late moments of the game. UMass Dartmouth used an 11-0 run in just over a minute to cut what was a 19-point lead to only eight at 11:08, but the hosts responded with nine straight Pace points to put the contest out of reach.
Both teams shot 50 percent in the first half. On the game, Tufts went 37-76 (49 percent) from the field on the night, while the Corsairs shot 32-72 (44 percent).
The Corsairs will return to conference action when they host second place Western Connecticut on Saturday Feb. 6th with a 3 p.m. tip time.
