PAWTUCKET, R.I. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men’s basketball program swept the first Little East Conference awards of the season, as junior Arinze Obiora (Lagos, Nigeria) and freshman Jake Ashworth (Fairhaven, Mass.) were named Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Obiora earns the honor following three double-digit scoring performances to open the season last week. Against Salem State on Wednesday, he dropped 13 points with nine rebounds, and added 14 points on Friday in UMass Dartmouth’s win over Elms to open the Hampton Inn Tournament. On Saturday, Obiora set a new career-high, recording a game-high 30 points along with 13 boards to lift the Corsairs to the tournament title over Castleton. For the week, he averaged 19.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game while shooting 57 percent from the floor, and garnered Hampton Inn Tournament Most Valuable Player honors.
Ashworth opened his Corsair career averaging 15 points and four assists per contest in his first three games. He was a key component in UMass Dartmouth’s two weekend wins, scoring 16 points and dishing out six assists against Elms on Friday. Saturday, he upped his scoring output to 21 points on 70 percent shooting from the field (7-for-10) including 4-for-5 from beyond the arc as UMass Dartmouth defeated Castleton, 103-95. For the week, Ashworth converted on 45 percent shooting and 38 percent from long range.
UMass Dartmouth opened the year with a 2-1 record, and will be idle this week before returning to the court on Tuesday, Nov. 28. The Corsairs host Brandeis for a 7 p.m. start.
