Since 1983, Brian Baptiste has directed one of thepremiermen’s basketball programs in the nation.  He hasledUMass Dartmouth to the NCAA Division III National Semifinals,twoappearances in the Regional Semifinals and one ECAC NewEnglandChampionship in his 18 postseason berths. 

Under his watchful eye, the Corsairs have posted a recordof566-283.  Entering his 32nd year on the bench, Baptisteisranked seventh among active Division III coaches invictories,while 14th on the all-time list.

UMass Dartmouth is the most successful men’s program intheLittle East Conference since its inception in 1986-87. TheCorsairs sport a .663 winning percentage, 13 Little EastConferenceregular-season titles, and 11 tournamentchampionships.

Under Baptiste’s supervision, the men’sbasketballprogram has registered 25 winning seasons. In 2007-08,UMassDartmouth opened the season with a 20-game winning streak enrouteto a 25-4 overall record. Ranked as high as second in DivisionIII,UMass Dartmouth captured the Little East Conferenceregular-seasonchampionship and advanced to the second round of theDivision IIINCAA tournament.

The finest season in the program’s history came in1992-93,when the Corsairs advanced to the NCAA Division III FinalFour. Infour appearances in the finals of the NCAA Division IIINortheastRegional, UMass Dartmouth captured two titles(1986,1992).

Baptiste registered his most decorated year back in 2000-01, whenheguided the program to a 25-3 record, which were the most winsamongDivision III teams for that particular year. He was named theLittleEast Conference Coach of the Year and the NationalAssociation ofBasketball Coaches Northeast District Coach of theYear. UMassDartmouth was crowned the regular season and tournamentchampionsand advanced to the “Sweet 16” of theDivision III NCAAtournament.    

Earning recognition from his peers, Baptiste was formerly thechairof the Northeast Division III Men’s BasketballSelecionCommittee. Currently, he represents the Little EastConference as aNational Association of Basketball CoachesCongressman and is amember of the NCAA Regional AdvisoryCommittee. 

A 1976 graduate of American International, Baptiste enjoyedanoutstanding collegiate playing career following his graduationfromNew Bedford High School. Currently, he resides in Dartmouth,Mass.with his wife, Kathryn Russo. The couple have four daughters:Jeana(31), Alaina (30), Erica (25) and Rachael(22).
