PLYMOUTH, NH-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's basketball team used an early 11-2 run to build an 11-point lead, led by 11 points at halftime and defeated host Plymouth State, 65-47, in a Little East Conference game at the Foley Gymnasium Saturday.
The Corsairs had an early 8-6 lead when senior forward Justin Pulver (Plymouth, MN/Falmouth HS/Johnson & Wales) sandwiched a pair of layups around a layup by senior center Lance Greene (Dorchester, MA/ Charlestown HS/UMass Lowell) to build their lead. Pulver followed with another layup, sophomore guard John Genkos (Worcester, MA/Doherty HS) added a three-point play, and freshman guard Jake Laga (Northampton, MA/Northampton HS) connected on a layup to give the Corsairs a 19-8 lead with 11:46 left in the first half.
The Panthers never got closer than seven points during the rest of the first half.
A 7-0 run at the start of the second half, which included a layup and a three-point play by Greene and a layup by Pulver, made it 41-25 and the Corsairs maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
Greene had 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Pulver had 10 points and 12 rebounds, each with a double double. Laga added 11 points, while senior guard Paul Rose (Boston, MA/North Cambridge Catholic HS/Mass Bay CC) contributed 10. Petey Shevas led the Panthers with 11. UMass Dartmouth outrebounded PSU, 39-35.
"It was a good team effort, our guys did a good job," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. "Lance played well for us, and Justin Pulver also did a great job, he was a really big factor for us with 10 points and 12 rebounds ad helped us control the game. Jake Laga came off the bench and gave us a nice boost. We're pleased with the win, and we're looking forward to playing Tufts Tuesday."
The Corsairs improved to 10-7 and 4-5 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Panthers dropped to 6-11 and 2-7 in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Tufts Tuesday evening. Plymouth State will visit Lesley Tuesday.
