SALEM, MA-Host Salem State built a 10-point lead in the second half and held off the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's basketball team, 83-80 in the 2011-12 season opener for both teams at Twohig Gymnasium Tuesday evening.
Senior center Lance Greene (Dorchester, MA/Charlestown HS/UMass Lowell) led the Corsairs with 18 points and 15 rebounds, freshman forward Alex Kershaw (Stoughton, MA/Oliver Ames HS/Tilton prep) added 16, and sophomore forward Eleazar Clayton (Boston, MA/East Boston HS/Monroe CC) had 12 points in 13 minutes before fouling out. The Vikings made 26 of 35 free throw attempts to UMD's 20 of 35.
"We worked really hard, but we sputtered offensively," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. "We had a few shots that didn't fall. They built a lead in the second half, and we made a run at the end, but they made their free throws and we didn't shoot well from the free throw line. We'll head back, and get ready for our tournament this weekend, when we need to bounce back."
The Corsairs dropped to 0-1 with the defeat, while the Vikings improved to 1-0 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they face Mount Saint Vincent Friday night in the Hampton Inn Classic at the Tripp Athletic Center.
