NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's basketball team will begin their second season when they host Plymouth State in a first round game of the Little East Conference Tournament Tuesday evening. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at the Tripp Athletic Center.
The fourth-seeded Corsairs are 17-8 and defeated Keene State in their last game Saturday, 105-93, at Spaulding Gym in Keene. PSU, which lost at Rhode Island College Saturday, 84-65, is 16-9. UMD swept the series from the Panthers, winning at Plymouth on December 5th, 67-63, and at home on January 23rd, 86-70.
UMass Dartmouth has won their last nine first round playoff games, receiving a first round bye in 2000-2001. Overall, they are 10-2 in first round LEC playoff games, and are perfect at home with a 7-0 mark. When the Little East Conference had only six or seven teams rather than the current eight, the top team or top two teams received first-round byes.
"I don't mind playing that first round game," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. "It keeps you sharp for the weekend. I'm excited that we have a home game, we're going into the game with a healthy team at this point in the season, and I think that playing at home is a big advantage."
The Panthers are a dangerous team, having earned the LEC's fifth seed and defeated each of the top three teams in the league, Rhode Island College, Eastern Connecticut State and Western Connecticut State.
"Plymouth State is a good team," said Baptiste. "They're going to be very competitive, and we will have to play our best in order to beat them. Hopefully, we will be up for the challenge, and we will come up with a win."
The winner of Tuesday evening's game will meet the host team, top-seeded Rhode Island College in a semi-final game at the Murray Center Friday evening.
