NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's basketball team will begin NCAA Division III Championship action away from home.
The Corsairs will play Baruch College of New York at the Harrington Auditorium at Worcester Polytechnic Institute Friday evening in the first of two games. Game time has been set for 8 p.m. after the host Engineers open play against Husson at 6 p.m. The regional championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.
UMass Dartmouth is making its second consecutive NCAA appearance. The Corsairs finished the season with an overall record of 25-3 and won the Little East Conference Tournament, defeating host Rhode Island College in the championship game Saturday, 62-53. UMass Dartmouth was ranked 18th in the final d3hoops.com national poll of the regular season and was ranked fifth in the Northeast Region last week in the final NCAA regional poll.
Baruch went 23-5 and finished first in the City University of New York Athletic Conference during the regular season with a 13-0 mark. The Bearcats lost to Brooklyn College in the championship game Saturday, 89-69. WPI finished with a 20-6 record after losing to Springfield in the semi-finals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Tournament, and Husson was 16-11 and won the North Athletic Conference title.
"I'm excited to be in the NCAA Tournament," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. "I'm disappointed that we're not playing at home. I thought that, based on our overall record, we should have been hosting a game. Now we've got to gather information on Baruch and get ourselves prepared to play them on Friday."
