NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's football team has been picked to finish fourth in the Boyd Division in the fourth annual New England Football Conference pre-season poll.
The Corsairs received 34 votes in the poll and were ranked ahead of Curry, Plymouth State, MIT and Nichols in the Boyd Division. Defending champion Western New England led the Boyd poll with 58 points and five first place votes. Salve Regina and Endicott tied for second with 54 points, with the Seahawks receiving three first place votes and the Gulls two.
Curry was right behind UMass Dartmouth with 30 points; MIT had 24, PSU 21 and Nichols 11.
Framingham State and Bridgewater State, the Corsairs' opponents in weeks three and two, respectively, tied for first place in the Bogan Division with four first place votes and 58 points. Westfield State, Worcester State, Massachusetts Maritime, Maine Maritime, Coast Guard and Fitchburg State were picked to round out the Bogan Division.
Western New England, Framingham State and Salve Regina each received four votes as league champion. Bridgewater got three votes, while Worcester State received the other one.
"I am not surprised by our fourth place ranking," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Mark Robichaud. "I think we can have a very good season. There are a lot of great teams on both sides of our division, so it should be a very interesting year."
This year's UMD schedule includes the top two teams in the Bogan Division in Framingham State and Bridgewater State, as well as a game against everyone in the Boyd Division. The Corsairs begin their 2011 season at Mount Ida Friday evening, August 31st at 7:00 p.m.
