FITCHBURG, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football team fell 25-20 to Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
UMass Dartmouth dropped their third consecutive MASCA game to close out the season with a 3-5 conference record and 3-6 overall. Fitchburg improved to 5-4 on the season and 4-3 in the conference.
The Corsairs could not stop Falcons running back Steph'fon Teague (Fitchburg, Mass.), who crossed the goal line twice and ran for 182 yards on 27 carries.
The Falcons opened the contest with a 6-0 lead thanks to a rushing score by Teague. The Corsairs countered with a six play, 51 yard drive resulting in an Anthony LaRose (Canton, Mass.) three yard touchdown. Fitchburg State rallied with back-to-back scores from Saint-Juste and Spencer to increase their lead to 19-7. UMass Dartmouth closed out the half with a two-yard touchdown from Scott Tupper (Holden, Mass.) to cut the deficit to five points.
In the second half, Falcon quarterback Garrett Dellechiaie (Leominster, Mass.) connected with Teague out of the backfield for a five yard touchdown to bump the score to 25-14. UMass Dartmouth reduced the score to 25-20 when wide receiver Jason Ferri (Billerica, Mass.) reeled in a ten yard touchdown pass from Cullen Hanna (Richmondville, N.Y.) with seconds remaining in the game.
On the ensuing kickoff, UMass Dartmouth went for the onside kick attempt, however an illegal touch by the Corsairs gave Fitchburg State the ball back, allowing the Falcons to run out the clock and secure the victory.
Defensively for the Corsairs, linebacker Derek Tarpey (Tewksbury, Mass.) recorded 13 tackles including two for a loss. The standout sophomore finished the season leading the MASCAC in tackles per game (10.9). Aiding Tarpey was freshman Trevor MacNeil (Holden, Mass.) with 10 tackles and Cody Merritt (Plymouth, Mass.) with seven.
