NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth junior linebacker Derek Tarpey (Tewksbury, Mass.) was recently named to the 2014 USA College Football Division III Preseason All-America team. He was just one of 81 student-athletes to represent their institution on the defensive first team.
Tarpey was selected to the inaugural All-Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference first team in 2013. The Tewksbury, Mass. product ranked among the NCAA Division III leaders in solo tackles (10th, 65), forced fumbles (26th, .33/g), total tackles (28th, 98), and tackles for a loss (29th, 15.5). Tarpey led the conference circuit in tackles per game (10.9) and forced fumbles (3), while ranking second in total tackles. He reached double digits in tackles in five games, including a career-high 22 stops against Bridgewater State. Tarpey was consistently in the Bears' offensive backfield, recording five tackles for a loss, a sack, and two forced fumbles. He garnered Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Northeast and MASCAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance against Bridgewater State.
In 19 career games, Tarpey has produced 169 tackles, 24.5 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks, one interception, and four passes defended.
The Corsairs will open their 27th varsity season on Friday, Sept. 5, when UMass Dartmouth travels to Mount Ida College for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
