Football Drops Season Finale at Western New England
Nov. 6, 2010
SPRINGFIELD, MA-Host Western New England scored twice within the first two minutes, raced to a 23-0 first half lead and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's football team, 37-14, in a New England Football Conference Boyd Division game at Golden Bear Stadium Saturday.
Mike Graham put WNEC on the board when he returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown. On UMD's first possession, the Corsairs lost12 yards in three plays, and Joe Bignal blocked (freshman) Chris Berganti's (Haverhill, MA/Central Catholic HS) punt, and Mark Devlin recovered at the Corsair 10. J.J. Jachym scored on the Golden Bears' first play to make it 13-0 with 13:02 left in the first half.
WNEC began their next possession at the UMD 37 after a pass by sophomore quarterback Patrick Orlando (Manchester, MA/Essex HS/Saint Anselm) was intercepted. The Golden Bears drove to the Corsair two yard line, but the defense stiffened and Jake Field's 19-yard field goal made it 16-0 midway through the first quarter.
Bryce Brown hit Brendan Thompson with a 38-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter to make it 23-0. The Corsairs got their offense going after sophomore Darrien Furr (East Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) intercepted a Brown pass in the UMD zone on WNEC's series. UMD drove 80 yards in 13 plays, with Orlando connecting with sophomore wide receiver Brendan McNeish (Springfield, MA/Bridgton Academy) from 17 yards out to make it 23-7 at 3:31.
"It was just a tough ballgame, WNEC came out ready to play and the first quarter and a half didn't go well," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Mark Robichaud. "We were able to sustain a few drives, but our defense, which had been playing so well, struggled at times. Their quarterback is tough, he is very athletic. They run a similar offense to ours, and he keeps the ball and is hard to bring down. In the second half, we drove down the field on our first drive and fumbled, and on our second drive, we went down and Patrick Orlando threw a great pass to (sophomore wide receiver) Joe Luiz (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang HS), and their guy just went up and got it. We just had a tough day."
For UMD, Orlando was 10 of 22 for 90 yards and also picked up 35 yards on the ground. McNeish caught six passes for 60 yards. Brown was 12 of 19 for 165 for the Golden Bears and also ran for 103 yards. Defensively, Junior linebacker John Cordasco (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls HS) led UMass Dartmouth with 11 tackles, including five solo stops. He had one tackle for lost yardage, and two interceptions. Phil Tsopanides led WNEC with eight tackles, including seven solo stops, and a pass broken up.
The Corsairs dropped to 3-7 and 2-5 in the Boyd Division with the defeat, while the Golden Bears improved to 8-2 and 6-1 in division play. The game marked the final contest of the season for UMass Dartmouth, while WNEC awaits possible post-season action.
