NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-For the fourth time in five weeks, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's football will play at home this Saturday. The Corsairs will play New England Football Conference Boyd Division foe MIT, with kickoff at Cressy Field scheduled for 12 noon.
The Corsairs come into Saturday's game with a 2-2 record, and are 1-0 in the Boyd Division by virtue of last Saturday's 16-0 victory at Plymouth State. The win was UMass Dartmouth's first over the Panthers since the 2004 season. MIT is 1-2 and 0-1 in Boyd Division play after losing to Curry last Saturday, 27-12.
"Our defense was outstanding against Plymouth State," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Mark Robichaud. "We made the plays all game, and that's a tribute to (Defensive Coordinator) Steve Faniel and the job he did getting the defense ready to play. Our defense has played well all season."
MIT has also played well. "MIT lost last week to a very good Curry team, which is always one of the most talented teams in our division," said Robichaud. "They lost the week before against a very good Mass maritime team after getting a good win in their opener against Becker. MIT is a good football team."
The Corsairs expect a tough battle. "MIT's offense is similar to ours, and, on defense, they do things that are similar to what we do," said Robichaud. "They are very aggressive, they are around the ball a lot, they are smart and they don't make a lot of mistakes. We will have to be prepared to make adjustments, and be able to take advantage of what their defense gives us."
In order to be successful for the second week in a row, a strong effort will be needed. "We need our defense to continue to play well," said Robichaud. "If our defense continues to play the way they are capable of, they will keep us in every game and give us a chance to win. Offensively, we have to move the ball, win the time of possession battle, and get the ball into the end zone."
The Corsairs will travel to Salve Regina next Saturday, returning home for the homecoming game against Nichols on October 15th.
