BREWSTER, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's golf team posted a team score of 317, good for 15th place in the 34-team field after the first day of action at the two-day New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships at the par-72 Captain's Course Monday.
UMass Dartmouth played the Port Course, one of two courses used for the tournament. The Corsairs are seventh of the 22 NCAA Division III teams in the field. Bryant and Holy Cross are tied for first place at 301. Salem State led the Division III schools with a score of 308.
For the Corsairs, senior Nick Jagoe (Westport, MA/Westport HS) and juniors Matt Connolly (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) and Kevin Rewinski (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield HS) led the way with identical scores of 79. They all tied for 58th place. Sophomore Brendan Kelleher (Hopedale, MA/Hopedale HS) shot an 80, and tied for 69th, while senior George Gillmore (Cotuit, MA/ Barnstable HS/Fairfield) shot an 84, and tied for 117th.
"I'm not happy with the way we finished, we left some shots on the course," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Joel Baptista. "We have to stay focused and stay in the game for 18 holes. The weather was good out here on the cape, we know what we have to work on for tomorrow, and we will try to get a lower score and see if we can climb the ladder a little bit."
The tournament will conclude Tuesday.
