NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's golf team performed a community service project recently.
The program called "Sweep up Swift" took place at the Jireh Swift Elementary School on Acushnet Avenue in New Bedford on Saturday, September 29th.
Armed with weed whackers, shovels, rakes, blowers, brooms and hedge trimmers, the golfers spent four hours cleaning up the playground at the school.
"Seeing the before and after pictures, this was like a version of 'Extreme Makeover', said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Joel Baptista. "The team worked real hard for a good cause and could see the results at the end. Not too many college students want to get out of bed at 7 a.m. on a Saturday, but I told them, 'Today when you woke up, you made a difference in someone's life.' The principal, Mrs.(Debra) Letendre, was elated and passersby were stopping and commending us for a job well done."
