GORHAM, Maine – Senior Brendan Kelleher (Hopedale, Mass.) shot one over par to lead the University of Massachusetts men's golf team to the Southern Maine Fall Classic title this afternoon at the Gorham Country Club.
The Corsairs captured the team championship with a score of 609 to edge Endicott College by one stroke. Husson University placed third (611) followed by Southern Maine One (617) in the 10-team standings.
Kelleher earned the top Individual Medalist award by shooting a combined 144 (even par) during the two-day competition. The senior from Hopedale, Mass. led UMass Dartmouth for the second straight day after carding a 73. Saint Joseph's (Maine) Mike Caron turned in the lowest card of the tournament with a score of 70 (2-under) to tie Kelleher atop the leaderboard.
Senior Pete Danko (Norton, Mass.) was the second Corsair and third overall in the clubhouse with a combined score of 148. Classmate Brandon Oldham (Mattapoisett, Mass.) turned in rounds of 78 and 80 to place 25th in the 50-person field. Sophomore Sean Griffith (Bourne, Mass.) shot an 84 on Day 2 to finish two strokes behind Oldham. Freshman Nick Valm (Dartmouth, Mass.) shaved seven strokes off his scorecard from Day 1 to help UMass Dartmouth claim the team title. He sunk a clutch two-putt on the 18th hole to complete the course with a score of 81 to place 40th overall.
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on October 12, when the Corsairs travel to Springfield College for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships.
