Golf Earns Runner Up Honors At GNAC Championship
CRANSTON, R.I. – Senior Pete Danko (Norton, Mass.) tied for the lowest round, 75, to help the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's golf team place second at the 2013 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships this afternoon at the Cranston Country Club.
Three UMass Dartmouth golfers lowered or match their Round 1 total as the Corsairs overtook the University of Southern Maine and Johnson & Wales to record their highest finish in the nine-team field since winning the 2010 tournament.
Rhode Island College captured its third consecutive team title with a combined score of 609 to outdistance UMD by 14 strokes. The Anchormen's Tim Leigh completed the par-71 course with a two-day score of 147 to earn the top medalist award.
Senior Brendan Kelleher (Hopedale, Mass.) carded the third lowest score of the afternoon to earn All-GNAC honors. Kelleher penned a 76 in his ledger for the second straight day to post a 36-hole score of 152 and place fourth overall among the 40-person field.
Danko shaved off three strokes off his Day 1 total to lead UMass Dartmouth into clubhouse. The Norton, Mass. product placed seventh overall with a combined score of 153.
Sophomore Sean Griffith (Bourne, Mass.) was the No. 3 scorer for the Corsairs, covering the 6,493-yard course with a two-day total of 156. Senior Brandon Oldham (Mattapoisett, Mass.) registered a combined score of 167 to finish two strokes ahead of Colin Campbell (Marlborough, Mass.). Campbell completed his round with a score of 83, marking a three-shot improvement from Saturday.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action on October 27, when the Corsairs compete in the First Round of the 79th Annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships. The two-day tournament will be held at the Captains Golf Course in Brewster, Mass.
