Golf Team Earns GCAA All-Academic Honors
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's golf team was recently named to the prestigious 2014 Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Division III All-Academic team presented by Farmers Insurance.
To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic team honors, a college or university must submit the grade point averages for each player on the official squad list the academic year. The Corsairs were just one of 23 Division III institutions to meet the 3.0 standard, posting a cumulative grade point average of 3.19.
Under the direction of Joel Baptista, UMass Dartmouth has represented the Division III student-athlete philosophy of a well-rounded education and strong athletic participation. Sixty percent of the Corsairs' roster garnered Dean's List honors with a grade point average of 3.2 or higher, while one golfer represented the squad on the Chancellor's List.
Last season, UMass Dartmouth captured the 2013 Southern Maine Fall Classic in October, edging Endicott College by a stroke. The Corsairs earned runner up honors at the annual Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships in Cranston, R.I. Baptista's charges overtook rival Johnson & Wales on the final day of competition to place second in the nine-team field, marking the program's highest finish since 2010. In the spring session, UMass Dartmouth finished in the top three in the final standings in five of its six tournaments, highlighted by a second-place showing at the Johnson & Wales Invitational at the Cranston Country Club between April 18 and 19.
